Paul is to benefit from independent voters

por Joseph Dickens-Gavito
Relaciones Internacionales - Universidad de las Américas Puebla

According to the latest New York Times/CBS News joint poll, independent voters who were crucial in Barack Obama’s victory in 2008 are now doubtful about his performance so far. This might be extremely important for the Republican candidate, who could benefit from the vote of unpleased independent voters.

I have been following Republican candidate Ron Paul ever since his intentions of becoming the Republican candidate back in 2008 and I strongly believe that in the possible scenario where independent voters do decide to vote Republican, “Dr. No” would be the candidate to gather the most independent votes and here’s why.

Ron Paul is the Republican’s awkward old uncle who is straightforward and just won’t back down. Paul’s consistent rants about how the government’s role, as prescribed by the Constitution of the United States, is to protect its citizens’ liberties and how making personal choices without interference from the federal government is primordial to a healthy and developed society, are both the headache of the Republican party and a very seductive speech to independents and Democrats alike.

Four years ago, the United States was in desperate need for a radical change. Bush’s disastrous foreign policy combined with Obama’s unquestionable charisma convinced independent voters that it was time to vote Democrat. This recent poll shows how independent voters are not too pleased with Obama’s performance, but I also believe independents are not ready to return to the arrogant, trigger-happy foreign policy most Republicans are willing to endorse. This might be another reason why independents, and some Democrat dissidents, would vote for Paul. His intentions to bring troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq and from American military bases around the world coexist with Democrat and independent anti-war stances. Paul believes foreign countries should seek to solve their problems on their own and that intervening in unnecessary conflicts will only bring unwanted consequences to the United States and will diminish one of America’s greatest attributes; Soft Power. Some of Paul’s remarks do sound much like a 2008 Obama, but independent voters may have faith that Paul will go through with his promises and end America’s catastrophic campaign around the world.

Another very appealing aspect of Paul’s campaign is that, unlike other Republican hopefuls, he is not blaming President Obama for America’s current illnesses. Paul is quick to disagree with Obama’s current policies, but he has never put blame on the current president and he has even gone ahead and defended the Democrat leader whenever he is in the crosshairs of his fellow Republicans. This most certainly will be very attractive to independent voters, who can imagine a president open to bipartisanship and perhaps even lure some Democrat “traitors”.

Paul’s current position in the polls has him a long way from becoming the next president of the United States. Republicans themselves seem to agree on something, they all hate Paul and they all concentrate their efforts on putting him out of the race. Nevertheless, a scenario where independent voters decide to vote Republican would certainly benefit someone with the libertarian policies of Ron Paul.

Take it easy mi Pau, everything is going to be alright.

Would Hobbes say that Mexico is in a State of Nature?

Por Thomas Cummings 400587
Carrera RI – UDLAP
In Thomas Hobbes “State of Nature”, that is a society in its natural state or without any form of government or ruler to run it; he says that every individual would ideally have a right to everything. Thinking rationally, if everyone had a right to everything, obviously our rights will collide. My right to steal takes away your right to have for example. So in this state, according to Hobbes, it would be a war of all against all. His most famous work is his book, the Leviathan in which he says that our world would be one without culture, art, society, navigation or other commodities because all of this would require too much force. Worst of all, he says that the state of nature would be a world of continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short (chapter 8, Leviathan).
In Mexico, it is estimated that between 30 and 40 thousand citizens (or more) have died as a result of drug related deaths, over 15 thousand in 2010 alone. An article in the LA Times called La Plaza says that in Ciudad Juarez alone there were 976 people violently killed from the beginning of this year to June when the article was published. The situation is so bad that the US Department of State has issued travel warnings for Mexico. There are elevated accounts of kidnappings and robberies as well.
So, would Thomas Hobbes say that here in Mexico, the people are living in continual fear and danger of violent deaths? This would depend on the opinion of each individual but for some, it is an everyday reality. Would Hobbes say that Mexico is in a pre-political state, a State of Nature?
Many people have begun to go out less at night, travel less and live in fear of others in our society. According to Hobbes, this State of Nature is due to a lack of an authority figure and social contract that everyone abides by. Many would agree then that here Hobbes’ theory applies. Mexico lacks a government strong and healthy enough to guaranty security for its citizens and to penalize those who do not follow the rules. There are many people in this society who do not follow the rules of it but are not punished. The majority of the murders, robberies and assaults here are never solved.
I think that to go as far as to say that Mexico has no government or authority figure is an exaggeration. This country is exhibiting some of the symptoms explained by Thomas Hobbes in his State of Nature but it is not completely there, not all of the citizens act according to the theory that everyone has a right to everything. There are a few in the society who cause distrust in the majority. So, to conclude, it is probably an exaggeration to suppose that Mexico is in Hobbes’ State of Nature but some may agree that the country is on its way back in that direction, back towards a pre-political state due to the lack of a strong government.

The end of the European Union

Por: Stefania Deriu, 144898: Ciencias Politicas, Universidad de las Americas Puebla

The end oft the European Union?
Economic crisis, national debts, new budget rules for the countries, these are the themes that are bothering the European Union in the last years, but especially in the last few months.  According to the New York Times article from the 28th of November 2011 different head of states in Europe are demanding a stronger influence of the European Central Bank and furthermore a strengthening of the European Union. Generally there are several disagreements between the single sates in the European Union, how the crisis can be overcome and also about the level of commitment to the European Union. But this is not the only conflict potential. A part from the disagreements between the single states, there are also divergences between the opinion of the state-politics and the inhabitants of the different member states.
Probably nobody knows what is going to happen in the future. What happens if the European Union and the Euro break, and the single states go back to their national currencies? Which political implication would this have? But one thing is already quite sure, even if the nations lost their influence and the European Union is always regulating more and more the European politics, a tendency of a rising nationalism can be identified, especially in eastern Europe, because they don’t accept the loss of their freedom which they finally achieved after the end of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In accordance to the author Andrew Heywood, economic uncertainty and the frustration towards established political parties, who are lacking the capacity of resolving social and political problems, is leading to an emergence of extremist right- wing parties.
The second question is what is going to happen with the welfare state? The welfare state is the most common explication for the national debts. Most of the European states had a “deficit spending” policy, which further on led to huge national debts. In the last view years, most states left the idea of a social welfare state behind, and started to implement a more neoliberal strategy. That’s why all over Europe the nations are reducing the public spending, starting from cutting health-care payments, introducing fees for universities and saving money in the education sector and finally decreasing other family assistance payments. Moreover more and more state owned companies are privatized. Unfortunately these actions lead to more frustration and unacceptability in the population. This leads again to more potential for extremist right- or left- wing movements, strikes and manifestations.

It is not sure what will happen in the future. Presumably most of the states will have to cut off the welfare state, in order to reduce the national debts. The neoliberal ideal will gain more influence, the state-owned companies will be more and more privatized in order to achieve better prices and more competitiveness. On the other hand these circumstances will cause more frustration in the population and the potential of extremist right- or left-wing actions will  increase.

The Second Cold War?

Por: Mallory Kate Huntley 144517

Universidad de las Americas Pueblas

For the younger generation in today's society the Cold War brings up vague ideas of a non-event that we've heard our parents, grandparents and history teachers discuss. However, could a second Cold War be on the horizon? And be a very realistic threat at that?

Because of the United States and NATO's new missile defense shield system, the Russians are all up in arms...literally. The missile defense shield is a system of advanced radar systems and interceptor missiles placed on both land and sea throughout Europe that is set to be released in 2020. The Russians however, are not in accordance with this agreement and are threatening serious action if the United States does not include Russia more in the planning process.

Today, November 23, the Russian President Medvedev threatened to not only deploy missiles in order to destroy NATO and United States missile defense stations, but also hinted at a withdrawal from the START treaty. The START treaty was set up as a nuclear disarmament agreement that President Obama has said is vital to Russian/American relations. Medvedev stated that if his demands were not respected, more drastic measures would be implemented.

The Russians primarily want a written contract stating the specifics of how the defense system would work and details such as how close missiles may come to Russia and her waters. Russia essentially wants to know if this is in her best interest.

All the while, the United States is claiming that Russia's demands are baseless and that the U.S. has been very open with Russia throughout the entire process.

But what does this mean for us in the long run? One of the giant red flags is Medvedev's threat to pull out from the START treaty. As history has shown us, Russia + United States + Nuclear Weaponry = No Good.

Medvedev has already threatened missile attacks, which would be incentive enough for the United States to strike back because we know that they never take a hit laying down. However, were Medvedev to up the ante with nuclear weaponry we would be in the same spot that we were in many years ago.

The question this time is though, would both countries hesitate to strike this time around? Or is this the breaking point of threats?
