As Election in Iran Nears, Ahmadinejad's Critics are Piling On

By Aldo Ibarra

In the article called As Election in Iran Nears, Ahmadinejad's Critics are Piling On from The New York Times, the author writes about the coming elections to be held in Iran next June. It talks about how critics are getting harder against the actual President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. They criticize the way he has taken Iran to a bad economical situation, despite the government's effort to declare that the actual conditions of the country are due to international sanctions. The media is taking back to scene the past elections and they refer to the President as a drunk driver. Ahmadinejad cannot run for the presidential election, the strongest person to do that is thought to be one of his closest man, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei.

I relate this article to the reading Going Negative from Stephen Ansolabehere and Shanto Iyengar. In Iran's presidential elections media is taking some advantage to criticize the actual President Ahmadinejad trying to achieve the voters turnout. The effects that this attacks can have in the voter can be crucial because the media is using religion and nationalism issues on people, along with the critics made to the economical actual environment in Iran and the troublesome political situation in the country. As the reading says, there can be antiisocial effects in these coming elections and the political and social situation in Iran can turnout really severe if the electoral battle continues going in a negative way.

In recent times, electoral campaigns around the world have changed along with the evolution of the media available for the political forces. Few weeks ago we have witnessed the tight election held in Venezuela or last year elections in the US. People behind the candidates need to be very careful to use certain information in a negative way. In some cases they can have the desired effect and create a great benefit for their candidate, in other cases, people see negative campaigning in a different sense and the benefits are for the attacked candidate. Nowadays campaigns reach more people, times where only some radio stations broadcasted the big speeches are behind, now a lot of information is available to more people on TV, Internet, and social networks. In Iran's coming elections, I think the negative battles is focused on the actual President Ahmadinejad. Somehow the virtual candidate Rahim Mashaei can take advantage of the time before making the official naming of the running candidates to create a strategy to counterattack the negative campaign. Iran's elections are scheduled for June 14 of the present year and negative campaign has getting stronger against the people at the power, the conflict between religions and nationalism issues are very dangerous to deal with, and if the negative campaigns continues, the situation can get worse and social disturbs can explode in a matter of few hours.
