Oil Companies seek Obama’s defeat

Carlos Elías Franco Ruíz

During last presidential elections in the USA, renewable energies were on the trend and both Obama and McCain were supporting turning the US into a green country. But this year, with Obama still being in favour of a green country, it doesn’t seem to be beneficial for oil, coal and gas extracting and commercializing companies. These companies are being replaced, slowly though, by new energy sources, so, they are now beginning to turn their support for Romney, by financing his campaign, or at least others are just trying to force Obama to adopt a friendlier position towards fossil fuels. They are also trying to influence in public opinion in the country, by publishing adds on newspapers, TV and even internet against the president, mainly accusing his policies of causing the prices of fuels to rise, especially those of the petrol and gas, this last one has nearly doubled during Obama administration. Another argument used is that high prices affect the families’ economy and, also hurts the national economy by weakening the enterprises’ economic capacity. The problem is that fossil fuel energy supporters and companies’ funds is much bigger than that of green energy supporters, thus their propaganda capacity and reach is much wider too. Obama’s policies have been criticized, mainly by opposers to him and to green energies. Amongst those policies there are charging more taxes on fossil fuels, lowering the building process of a pipeline coming from Canada and new clean air policies. The advertisements are especially targeted to some swing states, also classical fuel producers, such as Ohio, Virginia, Colorado and Pennsylvania
Green energy supporters and NGO’s are trying to make adds in support of Obama, his regime and his policies as a way of convincing more people to support these policies and to turn green. “There is no way we can compete with some of the richest companies in the history of the world”, declared Michael Brune, director of serra Verde, one of the most popular pro-green energy NGO’s in the USA. Some of the companies in question are the multinationals Chevron and Texaco, strong Obama opposers. This may be a strong factor against Obama, and he has to keep these enterprises satisfied if we doesn’t want this to affect his campaign, because the reach of this propaganda is very huge, so it may affect in the final decision of the voters. And probably Romney knows how to take advantage of this rivalry.
